Traditional hot water heaters work by filling up a tank of water, and heating that water until it reaches around 125°. This temperature is maintained 24 hours a day so hot water is available for plumbing fixtures whenever needed. As hot water is removed from the tank, cold water is added to the bottom and the tank is heated again.
The downside of this approach is the fact that the tank can be emptied, resulting in no hot water for awhile. You’re also paying to heat water 24 hours a day whether you’re asleep, at work or on vacation. Granted, a modern water heater doesn’t cost a fortune to run, you’re still paying for hot water that is never used.
A tankless water heater addresses both of the above problems. It rapidly heats water with an intense, gas powered flame. There is no need for a tank, because the water is heated instantly. This means that the home has an unending supply of hot water. It also means you’re only paying for the hot water you use.
